Description

Landscape painting offers the artist a playground of visual opportunities to experiment with color and structure. Students will immerse themselves in learning how to compose a landscape, establish a value structure, how and when to use warm and cool colors (temperature) and how and when to mute colors (chroma).  In the morning the instructor will go over general information about pastel painting. Students will also paint a few quick studies to help deepen the student’s understanding of chroma, temperature and value which will help students paint the landscape in the afternoon.  Each class will begin with a pastel demonstration. There will be ample time for individual feedback and personalized teaching.  If you have never painted with pastels before, now is the time to discover the magic of the stick (soft pastel).

Supply List

The following list is suggested and not carved in stone.  If you have any questions, please contact JuliAnn Robinson at workshops@sanfordarts.org

Students may bring their own reference photographs to paint from (which may be printed out). The instructor
recommends that the reference photographs be viewed on a digital device (laptop or iPad size, not the phone
(too small). Please be aware that the digital image will give much better color clarity and details than a
printout. If the student decides to use their own photograph, please send the image to the instructor to ensure
it is viable for this class.

The instructor will also email a photograph to students as well.
There are outlets for charging; however, bring an extension cord.

Pastels
The instructor uses a variety of soft pastels: Great American Artist, Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison, and
Richeson pastels. Students should try to buy a wide variety of values and colors because pastels do not mix like
you can other mediums.  Box of 30 minimum.  Please remove all paper wrappers prior to class.

Hard Pastels:

For an initial block-in, purchase 3-4 hard pastels: dark blue, med. value of violet, bright orange,
bright pink, dark warm brown. Soft pastels fill in the tooth of the paper too much.
To purchase a smaller beginner set, go to Judson Art Oufitters, Susan Nicholas Gephart Earth Water Sky Pastel
Set/8, or Jerry’s Artarama (online)
